Just when I thought I couldn’t love Nick Cave any more, I run across this – a letter he wrote to MTV in 1996 asking to be withdrawn from the music awards.
“TO ALL THOSE AT MTV,
I WOULD LIKE TO START BY THANKING YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT YOU HAVE GIVEN ME OVER RECENT YEARS AND I AM BOTH GRATEFUL AND FLATTERED BY THE NOMINATIONS THAT I HAVE RECEIVED FOR BEST MALE ARTIST. THE AIR PLAY GIVEN TO BOTH THE KYLIE MINOGUE AND P. J. HARVEY DUETS FROM MY LATEST ALBUM MURDER BALLADS HAS NOT GONE UNNOTICED AND HAS BEEN GREATLY APPRECIATED. SO AGAIN MY SINCERE THANKS.
HAVING SAID THAT, I FEEL THAT IT’S NECESSARY FOR ME TO REQUEST THAT MY NOMINATION FOR BEST MALE ARTIST BE WITHDRAWN AND FURTHERMORE ANY AWARDS OR NOMINATIONS FOR SUCH AWARDS THAT MAY ARISE IN LATER YEARS BE PRESENTED TO THOSE WHO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPETITIVE NATURE OF THESE AWARD CEREMONIES. MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY MUSE IS A DELICATE ONE AT THE BEST OF TIMES AND I FEEL THAT IT IS MY DUTY TO PROTECT HER FROM INFLUENCES THAT MAY OFFEND HER FRAGILE NATURE.
SHE COMES TO ME WITH THE GIFT OF SONG AND IN RETURN I TREAT HER WITH THE RESPECT I FEEL SHE DESERVES – IN THIS CASE THIS MEANS NOT SUBJECTING HER TO THE INDIGNITIES OF JUDGEMENT AND COMPETITION. i just love Nick Cave.
I don’t know if you know this but he was recently inducted into the ARIA hall of fame. (well, a few years ago now.) And watching his (un)acceptance speech gave me so much more respect for him. And I didn’t even know that was possible.

erm, what I can’t figure out is why I’m up here, and the bad seeds arn’t.
Now I’ve, thankyou, I’ve been told it’s because the bad seeds arnt a – an Australian act. and that there’s a – theres a few errr foreners in the band. but to me the bad seeds have allways been an australian act, and we’ve been out, overseas making authentic australian music. So, thankyou, so I would like to do a little bit of inducting myself.
uhrm, mick harvey, whom Ive worked with for 35 years, a great musician. The mind-bendingly gifted Warren Ellis. piano-player extraordinare Conway savage, and martin casey who’s the, just the greatest bass player in the world. I hereby induct you into the ARIA hall of fame.
Now that’s been sorted out, theres one other matter, before the bad seeds, i was in a band called the birthday party. Now the birthday party’s had untold influence over music in australia and internationally, uh largly due to the guitar work of Roland. S. Howard and the late, great, tracy pew.
a giant ?? rock musicians. And I would like to, with the power vested in me, induct these people also, into the aria hall of fame!
